LOCAL AND GENERAL. HORRIBLE, IF TRUE. At the Queanbeyan Police Court on Wed neaday, before Dr Richardson and Mr Gale, J.P., George Morris, of Hall, was charged with neglecting to send two children to school the required number of days. He pleaded guilty. He believed he was outside the distance, but he did not make that an excuse; be put in papers showing that the children were taught at home, but he would not use that in defence. He would not send the girl to school, and he would not pay any fine-he would go to gaol first. He had a reason. The Bench fined him is in each case, and 11s costs. Morris declined to pay. The Bench pressed him for his reason, and he told a tale that created horror. The account, shorn of indecency, was that the little girl of seven reported that two other girls and a boy threw her down and tried to outrage her. The two girls tore her clothes in holding her down. The Bench said they had no alternative, and in default of payment within seven days ordered 24 hours imprison. ment in each case, concurrent.

The sudden death of Mr- George Morris, of HaIl, on, Thursday last and whose inquest was reported in your issue of Saturday, has been the principal topic spoken of during the past week, and the greatest sympathy is awarded to the husband in his sad bereavement. The deceased, who was a native of Camden, was in-her 29th year; and had invariably enjoyed good health. She leaves four young. children,- the oldest being only eight, and the youngest only five weeks old. The remains were interred in the Church of England burial ground at the Glebe on the following day, attended by a largo cortege. In the absence of the Rev P. G Smith the service was rendered by the.Revd. Presswell..

    Goulburn Evening Penny Post (NSW : 1881 - 1940) Tuesday 27 September 1898 p 4
    QUEANBEYAN. (From Local Papers.)
An inquest was held at Hall on Thursday, before Mr. Coroner Downing and a jury, touching the death of Lucy Ellen Morris, who died suddenly that morning. George Morris, husband of the deceased, deposed that deceased was confined on 9th August, but got on well after it. On Sunday last she was bad, complaining of pains in the head and arm. On Wednesday night he came home at 9, and deceased was in bed; he asked her if she was any better, and she said, no. He stayed up all night, and at six in the morning he started for Gininderra. Deceased was then asleep, and he warned his eldest boy not to disturb her. His own words make a pathetic tale: -" I returned at 8.30 and found the boy nursing the baby. He said he could not wake mother up to give baby a drink. I went into the room with the child in my arms and found my wife dead. I really belhievo now that she was dead before I left, but I did not know it." A verdict of death from failure of the heart was returned.

To show the general respect in which Mr G. Morris, of Hall, is held, I believe it is the intention of a number of friends to render him assistance in his hour of trouble. For which purpose a ball and refreshments will be given in the woolshed, Glenwood, kindly lent for the occasion by Mr. James McCarthy, on Friday night next. Should the weather prove fine there is little doubt but what it will be numerously attended.
